Amazon.com Product Description

Take your golf game to the next level with the Leupold GX-4 digital golf rangefinder, a high-end, two-faced rangefinder that measures the distance to the pin with precision accuracy. In its default configuration, the GX-4 is a straightforward laser rangefinder, with a rugged aluminum body, vivid OLED display, and meticulous line-of-sight measurement system. Snap on the included yellow Smart Key faceplate, however, and the GX-4 instantly becomes a coach, providing accurate ranging information that matches your personal striking distances to the slope of the shot and current atmospheric conditions. The GX-4 even suggests which clubs to use, helping you step onto the course with confidence. It's like having your own caddy on the fairway, but without the small talk.

PinHunter and Prism Lock
The GX-4's most elemental features are its PinHunter and Prism Lock functions. Every GX-4 golf rangefinder has been precisely calibrated to fire a laser beam at the target in the crosshairs, whether it's a flag, tree, or sand trap. The rangefinder then uses its proprietary beam geometry to gauge the returns from the pin, and its advanced GX software to accurately separate those returns from the objects in the background. There's no better way to determine exactly where a flag or water hazard is located. It's even easier to range a distance pin on courses that utilize prism technology thanks to the GX-4's Prism Lock. Simply hold the top button to scan the area around the pin. The moment the GX-4 identifies a prism-topped flagstick, the rangefinder will beep and the display will freeze. The PinHunter and Prism Lock features combine to make the GX-4 the most accurate golf rangefinder on the market.

The GX-4's PinHunter function lasers precisely on a pin or other target.
Advanced Features
The GX-4 also includes a number of advanced features, accessible by switching the faceplate from chrome to yellow. The True Golf Range (TGR) feature, for example, uses sophisticated algorithmic-based software, temperature inputs, and altitude inputs to tell you exactly how far you should play a shot. If a golfer is hitting from the tee at a 30-degree slope above the green, the TGR will incorporate a golfer's hitting strength to calculate the best possible horizontal and vertical approach to the flag. Some golfers may be better served hitting a 6-iron, which will push the ball at a flatter trajectory and drop it down to the green sooner, while others would do better hitting a high 8-iron. The Club Selector takes the TGR function a step further by automatically recommending the appropriate club for each shot, and even indicating when the distance falls between clubs. Simply input the striking distance for three specific clubs and the GX-4 will do the rest. The TGR and Club Selector features offer a perfect way to get to know a course and improve your golf game. And if you're playing a competitive round with friends who demand an even playing field, simply snap the chrome faceplate back on and the GX-4 turns back into a traditional "no cheating" rangefinder.

The GX-4 also offers both Fog and Scan modes. Unlike most rangefinders--which give measurements from the first target returned, which in some cases is the fog between you and the pin--the GX-4 cuts through the weather to provide fast, accurate measurements to the green. You don't let anything stand between you and the cup, so why should your rangefinder? The Scan mode, meanwhile, delivers multiple readings in one quick sweep. Just hold down the Power button and the display will continuously update with accurate line-of-sight measurements.

Construction and Functionality
Leupold's products are legendary for their durability, with a ruggedly built housing and waterproof body. Fortunately for users, the optical system in the GX-4 is built to the same exacting standards, with precision glass, cutting-edge coating technology, and rugged structural components. The resulting optics are bright and clear, and offer accurate ranging, low glare, scratch resistance, and years of dependable use. On top of the optical precision, the GX-4 sports vivid red OLED displays, which are easy to read against any background and far superior to the standard LCD displays found in most golf rangefinders. Finally, the GX-4 offers an intuitive Quick Set Menu, giving you fast access to all the features of your rangefinder without cluttering the field of view. There's a reason the GX-4 is considered the top golf rangefinder on the market by critics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Details to Keep in MInd, June 23, 2010
This review is from: Leupold GX-4 Digital Golf Rangefinder (Sports)
This is NOT a review from an owner of this Leupold GX-4. I have been doing a lot of research on these, along with the Bushnell V2 Tour and 1600 Pro models, and here are a few things to be aware of. I am posting this because there are very few Reviews of the GX-3 or GX-4 available online, and because many of the websites advertising them are posting incorrect information.

Between the Bushnell 1600 Slope Edition and the Leupold GX-4 -- only the GX-4 is deemed "legal" for Tournament Play, and only if you use the supplied Key attachment (a yellow faceplate) to turn off disallowed features (slope inclinator, club selection, etc.). The Bushnell 1600 Slope Edition has no way to disable those features. It's food for thought if you really do want those features. If they are not important, then the comparison between the Bushnell 1600 Tournament Edition and the GX-3 are harder to make. But I think the GX-3 wins out.

Many, many websites list the number of Reticles for all... Read more

Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Leupold GX-4 Digital Golf Rangefinder (Sports)
I presently own several rangefinders and I have owned others in the past so I feel my comparison is fair.
I own the Nikon LR1200 which works wonderfully for its generation. It is fast and accurate which I used to compare other rangefinders.
The Leupold GX-4 is in a higher class of functionality. Here's why I'm significantly impressed with the GX-4 above other golf rangefinders.
1. The GX-4 has a rubberized grip over an aluminum body. It is very strong while being compact. It appears to have the same structure, quality, and design as expensive cameras. The Leupold company has not produced a cheap device for market share. They are the Lexus of rangefinders.
2. The instruction booklet is very easy to comprehend and learn. I'm a computer instructor and I know what great technical documentation is and Leupold provides it. It explains the hows, whys, and when you would use certain functions and those functions are easily set with just two buttons.
3. The... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars top notch, September 26, 2010
This review is from: Leupold GX-4 Digital Golf Rangefinder (Sports)
GX-4 - It lives up to expectations. I've had for a couple months now - and would buy it again.

1. I've had no problems hitting pins. Flagsticks with prisms are a piece of cake -as the unit beeps indicating it locked onto the prism.
2. Red OLED screen easy to read.
3. Fairly easy to setup.
4. All other features seems to work fine (incline/decine and club selector).
